GAYS AVOID MARGARITA-VILLE
IN A blow to Margarita Lopez, the state's most influential gay
organization announced yesterday that it would not endorse anyone in
the Manhattan borough-president's race.
The Empire State Pride Agenda will sit on the sidelines, despite the
fact that two openly gay candidates, including Lopez, are vying for the
job.
But while Brian Ellner was considered a long shot at best for the
group's nod, "this was supposed to be a slam dunk for Margarita,"
according to one source close to the organization.
Sources said ESPA's decision to sit out the race stemmed largely from
Lopez taking more than $115,000 from Scientologists for her campaign.
That enraged many in the gay community because in his writings,
Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard referred to gays as "sexual
perverts" who are "actually quite ill physically."
Despite the snub, Lopez maintained, "the Pride Agenda staff and board
have been extremely supportive of my candidacy."
One of Fernando Ferrer's major initiatives - the controversial
stock-transfer tax proposal - is nowhere to be found on his revamped
campaign Web site.
The site features a slew of press releases and positive media stories
on Freddy dating to February.
But not a word about the much-criticized plan, which would impose a tax
on stock trades to help pay for a $23 billion award to city schools
resulting from a lawsuit brought by the Campaign for Fiscal Equity.
Mayor Bloomberg's volunteers could be violating MTA rules by handing
out literature inside subway stations, and some cops are turning a
blind eye.
Appearing outside the Union Square station yesterday, mayoral candidate
C. Virginia Fields was flummoxed after seeing a slew of commuters
emerging from the subway armed with slick Bloomberg brochures.
A quick glance inside revealed a 20-something female was doling out the
pieces inside the turnstiles.
A transit cop noticed the leafleting and just walked by, according to a
source inside the Fields camp.
"The mayor's campaign seems to believe the rules don't apply to
them," said Fields spokeswoman, Kirsten Powers.
Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser said volunteers are instructed to not
enter the subways while giving out literature.
