It's certainly fortunate that Holly Elzea's friend Brae never fell for Scientology. There are literally dozens of ways one can get drawn into this group.

The Sea Organization is for the seriously indoctrinated. You get to share a room with other Sea Org members. You get to wear a fake Navy outfit and call each other 'Sir.' You even sign a billion year contract, coming back lifetime after lifetime to serve Ron.

You are, as a Sea Org member, also eligible for the Rehabilitation Project Force, or RPF, a re-indoctrination camp for recalcitrant members, where you can be held against your will, isolated from friends and family, subjected to serious abuse, and fed on leftovers after working at hard manual labor all day. They will hold you until you get your mind right. In some cases, people have been held for years.

There is a great deal of criticism surrounding Scientology. The majority of these people don't take issue with Scientology's beliefs, preferring to focus on the abuses, harassment and fraud perpetrated by this group.

Scientology tries to distance itself by a series of front groups which appear on the surface to address social concerns such as drug addiction, human rights issues, illiteracy and psychiatric abuses. Proponents of these programs state that they are not connected with Scientology, but rather, "based on the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard." However, these entities are under direct control of Scientology management, and a closer look reveals that many courses purchased by public Scientologists are identical to the programs offered within these front groups.

It's ironic (or L. Ronic) that Scientology would dare to present itself as concerned with human rights, as they so often violate the rights of members and critics. Their drug education and rehab program, Narconon, was recently expelled from California schools for providing kids inaccurate and false information based on Hubbard's junk science. It should be noted that Hubbard, a self proclaimed expert on everything, dropped out of college and purchased a doctorate from a diploma mill.

One of the more distasteful things Scientology members have supported is their "Volunteer Minister" program, which scuttles to high profile disasters to sell Scientology and get good PR. They were present at Ground Zero, having sneaked in around barricades, where they disrupted legitimate mental health volunteers and endangered rescue workers by their untrained presence. They were kicked out of Breslan following the terrible massacre of school children. They were kicked out of a Jerusalem hospital following a bombing. They come to prey on vulnerable people in a time of need. While others provide food, clothing and shelter, the Volunteer Ministers hand out promotional material and offer "touch assists," a Scientology laying on of hands with as much value as the Narconon program.

While individual Scientologists can be great people, they're still handicapped by the imposition of L. Ron Hubbard's odd beliefs, and they must accept them or suffer the consequences. Individual Scientologists are not allowed to look at material which is critical of Scientology, so they must rely on Scientology management for their information. Thus, they will never hear the horror stories that seem to dog Scientology's history like a trail of toilet paper stuck to a shoe.

Scientologists like to say "look at both sides," despite an inability to do so. Critical thinking skills should be engaged before embarking on net research. A Google search combining Scientology with other elements will be very enlightening. Elements such as 'Lisa McPherson, OSA, armed compound, abuse, suicides, deaths, niacin, war hero, Raul Lopez, Paulette Cooper, Miss Bloodybutt, Keith Henson, 911 tragedy, forced abortion, child abuse, domestic espionage, extortion and fraud will result in many articles worth reading.

Scientology has only been around for 50 years, and its history is rife with stories of shattered families, lost savings, damaged souls and wasted lives. Holly Elzea's screed merely parrots the party line. Scientology is good. Scientology helps people. Scientology wants a world without war and insanity.

Scientologists never mention how this is to be achieved, but Hubbard wrote it out. His goal was truly world domination. I leave you with these words by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

"There are only two answers for the handling of people from 2.0 down on the tone scale, neither one of which has anything to do with reasoning with them or listening to their justification of their acts. The first is to raise them on the tone scale by un-enturbulating some of their theta by any one of the three valid processes. The other is to dispose of them quietly and without sorrow."

--L. Ron Hubbard, "Science of Survival"

"The purpose of [a lawsuit] is to harass and discourage rather than to win. The law can be used very easily to harass, and enough harassment on somebody who is simply on the thin edge anyway, well knowing that he is not authorized, will generally be sufficient to cause his professional decease. If possible, of course, ruin him utterly."

--L. Ron Hubbard, first published in "Ability, the Magazine of DIANETICS and SCIENTOLOGY", 1955

"ENEMY SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."

--L. Ron Hubbard, HCO PL 18 Oct 1967, "Penalties for lower conditions"

"THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters."

-- L. Ron Hubbard, Technique 88
